General information

Population

Udmurtia is a multinational Republic, where representatives of more than one hundred and seventy ethnic nationalities and groups live. Russians, Udmurts and Tatars are the most numerous.

Udmurts

Density of population of the Republic is 36,7 people per square meter, which is 4 times more than the mean value of population density in Russia.
As of January 1, 2006 population of the Republic was 1544,4 ths. people. 69,2% of them were the citizen of cities and urban settlements.

As of January 1, 2006 the Republic population capable to work was 994,7 ths. people (64,4% of the total population of the Udmurt Republic). Population capable to work is 1,1% of the total employable population of Russia.

National languages of the Udmurt Republic are Udmurt and Russian languages. Udmurt language is a language of Udmurt nation which exercised the right to self-determination and Russian language is a national language of the Russian Federation.

There are six cities in the Udmurt Republic: Izhevsk - the capital of Udmurtia, Sarapul, Glazov, Votkinsk, Mozhga, Kambarka.

Geography / Climate

The Udmurt fields

Udmurtia is situated in the western part of the Middle Ural, between the Kama and its right tributary - the Viatka river. All rivers are related to Kama basin. The largest rivers are Cheptza, Vala and Kilmez. There are a lot of underground drinking water sources, that is why Udmurtia is called the land of springs.

The republic is located in the middle northern latitudes and far from the seas and oceans which makes its climate moderate continental with cold winters and warm summers.

Nature of Udmurtia is rich and colorific. Vegetation cover is taiga zone. About 46% of the republican territory is covered with forests. Firs, birches, pine-trees and aspens prevail, but oak-trees are also available.

Flora of the Republic is represented by over 1700 types of plants. Fauna is manifold as well. There are deers, boars, bears, foxes, hares and other animals in the forests. There are various breeds of fish in the rivers.

The territory of the Udmurt Republic covers over 42 thousand square kilometers (0.25% of the territory of the Russian Federation) and surpasses the area of such western European countries as Belgium and Switzerland and is approximately equal to the area of Denmark.

The Udmurt Republic is a part of Volga federal district.
Distance between Izhevsk city, the capital of the Udmurt Republic, and Moscow city, the capital of the Russian Federation is 1129 km, between Izhevsk and Saint-Petersburg - 1904 km, between Izhevsk and Yekaterinburg - 800 km, between Izhevsk and Kazan - 395 km.


Public administration

The Udmurt Republic is a republic within the Russian Federation. In accordance with the Constitution of Udmurtia state power in the Udmurt Republic is exercised by the State Council of the Udmurt Republic, the President of the Udmurt Republic, the Government of the Udmurt Republic, the Constitutional court of the Udmurt Republic, Justices of the peace of the Udmurt Republic.

The Udmurt Republic is a presidential republic. The State Council of the Udmurt Republic is the legislative (representative) and control body of state power of the Udmurt Republic.

The President of the Udmurt Republic is the highest official in the Udmurt Republic and the Head of the highest executive body of the Udmurt Republic - the Government of the Udmurt Republic.

The President of the Udmurt Republic is elected for the period of five years. The Government of the Udmurt Republic acts within the term limits of the President of the Udmurt Republic and abdicates when the new President of the Udmurt Republic is elected, but still continuing to carry out its obligations until the new Government of the Udmurt Republic is formed.
