In 2007 volume of Gross Regional Product of the Udmurt Republic amounted about 199,9 bln. roubles. Average annual dynamics of Gross Regional Product in 2002 - 2007 was denoted by growth of 3,5%. The maximum growth rate of Gross Regional Product was 7,3% in 2003.

Over five years the Gross Regional Product has grown by 2,6 times in current prices.

The leading branches providing the major volume of the Gross Regional Product of the Republic are industry, agricultural sector, construction, transport, communication and trade.They take 75% of the Gross Regional Product.

                                                       

Industry

History of industry of Udmurtia as "a forge of weapon" started since foundation of factories on Izh and Vyatka rivers in the beginning of the 17th century.

Up-to-date industry of the Republic is a unique industrial complex producing a wide range of products from consumer goods to small-arms weapon and space-system engineering.

In the Republic there are over 400 large and medium-sized enterprises. Most of them have modern technical equipment and facilities, and experience specialists. High level of production standards was put during fulfilling arms contracts, which impose exclusive quality standards.

Machine-building and metal-working

Machine-building and metal-working is the leading industry in the Udmurt Republic. The share of this branch comprises 40% of total industrial output over the recent years and more that 50% of working population is engaged in it.

Special attention is paid to use of idle facilities of defense industry companies in Udmurtia. These companies have infrastructure of defense production facilities, mobilization capacities, financial and legal self-dependence.

Machine-building companies continue to implement perspective projects for manufacturing of wide range of traditional for Udmurtia products - weapon, machine-tool, instrumental, energetic, car maker, oil, railroad, communications, space.

At the moment there is the joint project of SOK group and KIA Motors company. In 2005 they started serial production of KIA Spectra car in JSC "IzhAvto". Over 24 ths. KIA cars were produced in 2006.

 

Metallurgy

The leading plant in this industry is JSC "Izhstal". There is reconstruction of steelmaking and scrap-processing shops, which will allow to increase production of competitive products of fourth processing.

Manufacturing of products with higher added value has increased: products of fourth processing, forged products, die molding, silver steel, strips, steel shapes profiles, nomenclature of popular steel grades (high speed, stainless and nichrome). At the same time all demands of Udmurt industries in different types of products of ferrous metallurgy are satisfied.

Production of oil

Oil production is one of the leading industry in industrial complex of the Udmurt Republic. Udmurtia ranks 10th in Russian rating of oil production volume.

2 largest oil companies produce oil on the territory of the Udmurt Republic: JSC "Udmurtneft" and JSC "Belkamneft", making 97,5% of the total volume of produced oil, and there are also 9 small companies.

In 2003-2006 there was a sharp increase of oil production volume, connected with intensification of production in oil industry of our Republic. In 2006 oil production in the Udmurt Republic exceeded 10.2 mln. tons.

        

Wood-working industry

The share of wood-working industry in total industrial output of the republic comprises 2.7%. Despite low specific weight, the industry is socially important in terms of employment and social-economic development of forest settlements.
The largest enterprises are JSC "Uvadrev-Holding", JSC "Glazovskaia furniture factory", JSC "Izhmebel", CJSC "Krasnaia zvezda", JSC "Mozhginsky logging and saw mill", JSC "Udmurtlesprom-Holding".

Timber industry companies annually produce over 170 ths. cubic meters of woodchip boards, over 16 ths. cubic meters of plywood. House construction from rounded log, laminated film and charcoal was launched.

"Development of timber processing complex of the Udmurt Republic in 2006-2008" Republican target-oriented program is being implemented. In present-day conditions integration of timber industry companies is perspective, because this allows to increase competitive strength of companies and quality of products.

 

Other branches of industry

There are also other branches, which are very important for the Republic's economy. They are cellulose and paper, light, glass, medical, printing, construction materials and others. These industries in total produce over 7% of overall volume of industrial products of the Udmurt Republic

 

Agricultural sector

Share of Udmurt gross agricultural output in total Russian one is 1,2 % and in level of Volga Federal District output is 4,9 %.
The climate and nature of the Udmurt Republic make it possible to successfully develop multi-branch agriculture, produce foodstuffs and agricultural products for further processing. most of the arable lands are sod-podzol. Total area of land, used in agriculture, is 1907.4 thousand hectares. 1719.5 thousand hectares of them are agricultural land, including 1312.5 thousand hectares of arable lands.

Cooperative forms of management, based on private ownership of land and property are prevailing. As of the beginning of 2006, there were 422 large, medium and small agricultural organizations in the Udmurt Republic.

 

Cattle breeding

In agricultural production share of cattle breeding in gross agricultural output is over 60%. The following traditional branches of cattle breeding are well developed in the Republic: cattle farming, pig farming, poultry breeding
